About the Band

The Litton High School Marching 100+

The Litton High School Marching 100+ was a legendary Marching Band. They were known for being one of the best Bands in the country. They performed across the country, including the Tournament of Roses Parade and the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade! We hope to honor the legacy of the Litton High School Band by striving for excellence in everything we do. We are grateful for the support of the Isaac Litton Alumni Association.

Grade Level Bands

Each grade level, 5th-8th, has a Concert Band that rehearses during the school day. These Bands have two concerts each year, one in December and one in May. They also perform for special events like Dynasty Night, the Black History Month assembly, and 8th Grade Promotion. Students earn grades for Band class through written assignments, playing tests, materials checks, and performances.

Students who wish to participate in extracurricular Band activities must be enrolled in their Grade-Level Band class.

Pep Band

The Pep Band is an optional group for 6th-8th grade Band members. Each year, the Pep Band performs at 2 football games, 2 basketball games, and pep rallies. They play popular music like Go Big Blue, Seven Nation Army, We Will Rock You, and MANY more. They cheer the Lions to VICTORY!

There are no outside-of-school rehearsals for Pep Band, and there is no commitment. Members need to purchase a Pep Band t-shirt in the fall, and they may attend as many performances as they wish.

Honor Band

The Honor Band is an optional, auditioned group for 6th-8th grade Band members. They play advanced music and learn advanced techniques. Students must pass an audition in the fall to be invited to join. The Honor Band rehearses on Tuesday mornings at 7:45 a.m. and has extra performances in the spring.

They travel to MTSU for Concert Performance Assessment each year. The Honor Band consistently earns Superior and Excellent ratings at Performance Assessment.

The Groove

The Groove is optional for 6th-8th grade Band members. The group is part of a program called "Jazz Band Jumpstart" with the Nashville Youth Jazz Ensemble. Each semester, students play music and learn how to perform in a smaller ensemble. They perform their selections at our Winter and Spring Concerts.

Morning Band

Morning Band is open to all Band members. On Mondays and Fridays at 8:00 a.m., students may come to the Band Room for unstructured practice time. It's a great time to practice, connect with others, and get help from Mrs. Reid or a peer mentor. Morning Band is one of the most popular Band activities!

District and Regional Honor Bands

7th and 8th grade Band members have two exciting opportunities each year. In October, they may participate in MNPS Middle School Honor Band. This is an event for all the best Band students from across the district! The audition happens in mid-October and the clinic and concert are usually in early November.

They may also audition for Mid-State Honor Band, which is for the best Band students in all of middle Tennessee! The audition is in November and the clinic and concert are in January.

Solo and Ensemble

In the spring, all Band students may participate in the Solo and Ensemble Festival. They may choose to perform a solo or with a small group and earn a score and medal. They also receive feedback and a mini-lesson after performing. This optional event usually happens on a Saturday in early May.

Private Lessons

Students have the option to sign up for Private Lessons with professional musicians. These valuable one-on-one lessons may be scheduled during Band class, so students don't have to come in before or after school. Private lessons are totally optional, but highly encouraged!

MNPS Summer Middle School Band Camp

One of the most exciting, enriching opportunities for Band students is Summer Band Camp. Camp is open to all students who have completed at least one year of Band. Students who attend Camp get to play in a large band based on their ability, in addition to masterclasses, sectionals, and music theory class. I see DRAMATIC improvements in students who attend Band Camp!

Band After Litton

After leaving Litton, Band students are able to continue their musical studies in high school and beyond. The Stratford High School Marching Legion performs at football games. They invite the Litton 8th grade Band to join them at a game each year!

There are many extracurricular opportunities for Band students. Students may choose their level of involvement. Some students only want to participate in their Grade-Level Band. However, many choose to join the other bands to expand their musical skills, try new things, and meet new people! There's a place for everyone in the Litton Band.
